The project began with the Open Engagement "Welcome Committee", comprised of Sandy Sampson, committee chair/artist and  artists Anne Greenwood and Jill Odegaard  arriving at the Portland International Airport on Thursday afternoon, May 17th.

The stage for the project was set just outside of gate D,E,F, at the PDX airport. The primary intention was to greet and welcome conference presenters to Portland and to provide them with directions on finding their way into the city and their home base during the conference
